Posted By JohnnyB Hi all, I require a bit of guidance due to hitting a bit of a brick wall regarding my career development and future prospects. I currently hold both NEBOSH General and Fire Certificates and wish to progress onto the Diploma, however, my employers do not think it beneficial to them if i were to undertake this (Costs/ Current Personnel etc). A university close to me run a Professional Diploma in H,S & E Management which would be a likely alternative due to it being day release and I could obtain student loans/ grants. However, this qualification only takes me to GradIOSH status on completion which still leaves further work to do to reach CMIOSH. Do you think the university course would be worthwhile or shall I try and hold out for the NEBOSH Diploma? I have looked into other H,S&E vacancies at other organisations (and applied to a few) but they all request higher qualifications to what I hold. Many Thanks, JB

Posted By John Fraser Hi Johnny Do the NEBOSH Dip or NVQ Level 4. NEBOSH Dip can be expensive, but if you do it distance learning it is cheaper than day / block release. Distance learning takes a lot of time to do but is the leading qualification to do in my opinion. John

Posted By Catherine Ince For clarification, the NEBOSH Diploma also gives you GradIOSH status and you have to go through the IPD process to get to CMIOSH. All the best, whatever decision you come to, Catherine.

Posted By DP Am I correct in assuming you refer to the Nott's Trent University Professional Diploma. If so, this is a Level 6 qualification along with the other two mentioned and grants you GraOSH status. The rest has been explained to achieve CMIOSH. It is an academic course along with the NEBOSH Diploma combining exams with topical assignments throughout the academic year. It does however have an advantage over the NEBOSH Dip, there in an Environment Module which once passed get you the Associate Grade of IEMA. Slight disadvantage, it not as widely known as the NEBOSH Dip with employers. However its an excellent alternative to the other two. It is highly regarded amongst safety people I know. Hope this helps.

Posted By JohnnyB Thanks for all your responses, especially DP who really cleared things up (you are correct it is being run at Nottingham Trent)!! Catherine, Apologies for my missunderstanding of how to acheive CMIOSH (I though you automatically achieved this by passing the Diploma)! JB

Posted By Catherine Ince No apology necessary - I just didn't want you to think there was a more direct way of getting to CMIOSH (if only...)! Catherine.

Posted By sezm2105 Hi Johnny I originally started the Nebosh dip as a self funder, my employer let me go on day release as long as took the day off unpaid!! But it was what I wanted so... I then found out that the Nebosh dip as it is a level 6 is now accredited by the learning skills council which means as a accredited course some providers may be able to waive tuition fees depending on your circumstances... All the rest you know, I'm hoping to be awarded GradIOSH soon now that I've completed my dip and you can always start your Cpd before achieving grad status and that way you are sort of your way to CMIOSH.... Good luck in whatever you decide to do and I hope that you enjoy it as well! Sarah.

Posted By Allan Curran No disrespect to those who own the Nottingham and Trent qualification but every job application I have ever seen asks for the 'Nebosh Diploma or equivalent'. As H&S professionals we know there is nothing much between the two, but some employers dont and they no doubt rely on other job ads that they see to guide them on what they 'should' be asking for - I was faced with that choice until I had a conversation with a college colleague who told me he'd been for an interview and even though he had the ' equivalent' he was asked why he didn't do the diploma - the implication was that in their minds the diploma was the more worthier option.

Posted By DP Allan Strangely enough there is a debate going on in the Discussion Forum about the N Dip vs others!! (again!! yawn!!). Yeah - I did try and make that point about employers because your comments are true. Holders of the Nott's Trent, IMO, could easily clarify exactly was the qualification was and what it entailed in their covering letter for any position applied for. Especially in the ones that request the N dip only, I always feel these employers have read to many bad reports on NVQ's and they want somebody who has taken an academic route. The Nott's people have most certainly done this. I would have thought this would do the trick and lets not forget there are other Dips and Qualifications out there but it only the profession that seems to know!!
