Good morning all

I passed my Nebosh diploma a few years back and am wondering whether it would be worth studying the Nebosh fire safety certificate to improve my competence in this area, or will the content of the course be similar to that covered in the diploma.

Many thanks

Hi Eliot, having passed the Nebosh fire cert in Jan 07 I found it an excellent course specifically for fire mitigation.

I have just sat my last sit-down exam Unit c (undertaking Unit D now for March)....

....I found the Nebosh diploma more at a technical level than the certificate level of the Nebosh fire certificate, so I would highly recommend undertaking the Nebosh fire cert.

What you have to remember Eliot is that Health & safety practitioners who have the Nebosh diploma looking for work in the construction sector can be knocked back, all because they don't posses the Nebosh construction cert (that is why I sat this as well).

Future employees are not only looking for Nebosh diploma but specific certificates in areas such as fire, construction, environmental, oil/gas.

So do it Eliot, (You will not regret it as it's a great course).

Hi Philip John

I agree what you say about the NEBOSH Construction Cert and diploma - construction Cert is a very worthwhile qual ( along with Nebosh Fire Certificate )to team up with the diploma especially when one is looking for h & s positions in the construction industry.

I would recommend this certificate for someone to add to there NEBOSH Cert.
reason being it has just landed me a post as a
Fire and Safety advisor at a National Health Service Trust ------- but if I had a Diploma I would class it purely as a refresher course as the Diploma is a lot higher and I do not think it adds to that grade if looking for employment

Paul I understand what you are saying but, sometimes its what potential employers are looking for in additional to the diploma.

As I've seen it stated on job descriptions.

Also great for CDP/IPD!

If you have got chance to do this course then snap it up!

The content is great and really helps with Fire Risk Assessments and implementing imporvements/ controls! I have just completed a massive overhaul of our previous assessment.

I did the NEBOSH Diploma first and then did the NEBOSH fire cert afterwards.

Have spoken to some who have the Diploma and I am surprised by the number of Diploma holders who either consider the NEBOSH fire certificate to be below them (yes, some do think that its below their status) or look at it as a simple refresher course. Sure they have a L6 qualification in the bag and this is set at L3. I say, so what?

This is my opinion. (And before I get the "what do you know" replies, I am a qualified prison fire officer).

I consider that when I did the Diploma - the fire element (one day) did not go that deep. On the other hand the NEBOSH fire cert (four days) covered the subject to a deeper and wider breath.

So I say:

1. Want a refresher then read a book.

2. Want a good course to help with competency (even after the Diploma, MSC or NVQ4). Then do the NEBOSH fire certificate or a similar Institute of Fire Safety Managers (IFSM) Accredited Course.

Crack on.

I suggest before anyone puts pen to paper regarding Fire Risk Assessments, they read the RRFSO, or at least a summary (all guidance for building types downloadable free from Gov online), and make a decision if they would like to stand in front of a Judge and Fire Service expert witness regarding their recorded document if there was a loss to life.

NEBOSH Diploma alone, in no way, would deem you a competent person in respect of fire safety and risk management.

Personal opinion of course.

Hugo is absolutely spot on with what he says

I have the Diploma, then I did the fire certificate - which went a lot more in depth than the diploma.

I have recently taken the Fire Managers Certificate with Vulcan Fire Training and would urge anyone who is involved with fire risk assessments to undertake this course - the trainer was fantastic and very experienced

I teach both. Dip covers fire in 1 day - Fire Cert in best part of a week (plus 32 hours of private study, as per the syllabus).

The fire cert is in my experience way above Dip in this area and well worth doing.
