In times of trouble shouldn't networking help

Posted By PJA Just a thought,in these inclement times would it not be helpful for all those looking for work,to be assisted/helped by members on this forum? My point is,that when people ask for help i.e tell us that they are either redundant/looking for a start etc, shouldn't we be able to see the threads to further help in these situations?
Since the website has been set up we have not had a economic downturn such as this and we should give all the support we can to those in need
IOSH is a charitable organisation and periodically we all need help of one sort or another.
IOSH members in my experience are a helpful bunch, but when people ask for help all that happens is that the thread gets locked.
Please don't lock this thread as i am genuinely interested in what IOSH members have to say

Posted By Jane Lowe I agree that when job hunting it would be valuable if posts weren't locked as it is very rare that you get any response by email.
However I understand that from other threads on this subject that the reason posts are locked are for confidentiality purposes and because recruiters pay a lot of money to advertise their positions and if they could contact candidates directly the income to SHP would decrease (correct me if I am wrong)
So although I understand both sides of the argument I still hope that something could be done to make it easier to help those starting out/being made redundant/looking to further their career to network with potential employers.
I too would be interested to hear people's views on this as it does seem rather frustrating.

Posted By DennisH To be honest, posting your name, experience, availability and locality on here isn't networking - it's touting (not that there's anything wrong with that).
Networking means (IMO) getting out there and developing a load of contacts amongst friends, family, colleagues, local businesses, fellow iosh members etc. Personal contact is the key.
Locking the threads keeps it specific to the poster. Leave them open and your message will get lost amongst the "me too" and agency posts that follow.
Everyone can see the request, and can contact the poster direct should they have something to offer.
The very best of good fortune to anyone finding themselves in that position.

Posted By GeoffB4 Dennis - what's the difference between touting and networking when looking for a job?
