Posted By Princess Hiya, I have luckily been selected to interview with a rail company and would be grateful for any advice you can provide with regard to what i should research prior to the interview. I applied on a whim liking the job description but not thinking I would actually get a reply. I don't have any experience in this area which is evident on my CV so they must just like me. I really want to do well at the interview as this would be such an amazing opportunity - i eventually want to do more crisis (business continuity) type safety and I know that eventually I could do this if I get into such an organisation. Your help would be most appreciated. I have done my research on the company, and all I know about the interview company is that they will ask some technical questions. I am at a loss as the environment I am in is office based and therefore not particularly technical. Please help. Thank you. Princess.

Can't tell just in case i'm going for the same job - only joking. If you are not used to a rail environment then I doubt whether you will get any technical questions in that area as it is quite specialised. I suggest that you do your homework on the company and the projects that they are involved with. Also, depending on the role, make sure you understand the types of hazards and controls you may be expected to encounter.
I have worked in the rail industry for 25 years and it can be a very diverse environment eg operational, maintenance, track renewals, S&T, refurbishment, construction, civils etc.

I'd have a look at the RSSB website and get a feel for current issues and stats.
Good luck, Peter

Posted By Princess Hello Ray,
I doubt you and I would be up for the same job - I think it would be you interviewing me instead! From your posts you seem to have a wealth of experience.
Peter, many thanks, that's great and very useful.
Many thanks for the helpful and reassuring advice.

Posted By Dav Do some research into 'Safety Cases' as these are important documents with regards to rail safety.

Posted By A Campbell Hi Princess, Not sure if you have had the interview or not but keep us posted how things went?
A late addition I know but a good understanding of Safe Systems of Work would be useful as they do tend to scrutinise documentation pretty thoroughly, although my experience was on the tube mainly it also applied to rail depots too!

Posted By Andy Petrie Rail is very varied few main from the
Operating Companies who are primarily focused on running the railway to time in a safe manner, they mainly focus on safe operating procedures and maintenance, you'll need less technical knowledge to work for them and they cover more of the normal H&S topics, also emergency management is a big are for them.
Maintenance Companies - this is more technical but the key areas are around possensions management and safety within a possessions, then any general work site risks such as manual handling, vehicles etc.
Constriction - like maintenance but on a bigger scale, less of the possession issues and more along the lines of traditional construction.
There are many others but you will probably fir into one of these areas.
To anyone who works in these areas who I have misrepresented, I apologise, I was trying to keep things simple for a beginner.
The main thing is to show willingess to learn and you'll be fine, good luck.
