Posted By Michael F I have recently finished my NEBOSH Diploma and Im currently thinking about my next move. Alot of jobs out there are Health, Safety and Environment orientated.
I was wondering would this environmental diploma hold much weight with employers who request a 3rd level degree or a similar standard diploma?

Posted By MP Grayson I would say yes.
My money is on someone eventually (hopefully sooner rather than later) sorting out the Environmental legislation mess/cluster and putting all of the ducks in a line once and for all.
When they do do that, I think that there will eventually be a requirement under environmental legislation to appoint a nominated and competent(ish) person. Like wot Reg 7 does in the Management Regs.
If that does happen (my opinion only) then those with both HS-Dips and EM-Dips will be poised to rule the world.
Ever considered the BSC or IEMA Dip-EM. I did the BSC Dip-EM after getting the HS-Diploma. I can say without any doubt, after a L6 NEBOSH health & safety Diploma, the Environmental Diploma was a breeze.
Cracking idea in my opinion, so crack on.

I agree with both of your comments.
I am currently doing the nebosh environmental diploma distance learning, and I think it will be beneficial in the long term as more and more safety positions have an environmental and also at times a quality aspect to the job.

Posted By Bluenose Michael,
I have both the NEBOSH Safety and Environmental diplomas and am presently employed as a SHE advisor. A job I got because of the qualifications and experience. If you look at the jobs in SHP, more and more are asking for both disciplines, so doing an environmental qualification is a logical step to improve your employment prospects. As a matter of interest, I found the environmental diploma easier and far more interesting than the safety one.
I hope that this helps.

Posted By Suffolkman 100% agree with the comments about multi- skilling and getting some environmental training and experience, though i am not sure NEBOSH Env diploma is the answer as the lead organisation is really IEMA who have their own certificate ( thought they recognise the diploma)
Not sure i agree with the comments about 'getting their ducks in a row' through... any site with significant environmental effects and risks will be controlled under a PPC permit one of the conditions of which is an ISO 14001 EMS, and my experience of 3rd party auditors and the regulators is that they will want to see suitable competent people in post, plus the new combined permit regulations do make specific reference to 'competence' though I believe they only specify WAMITAB for waste operations so far..
Anyway having said that go for it!!and go green!!

Posted By MP Grayson The point is that EMS(s) such as ISO 14001 etc are a voluntary issue for many organisations.
The whole Environmental legislation system in this country is a complete mess and needs sorting out.
Until someone takes the bull by the horns and gets the mess sorted we will just keep going around in circles with the odd company looking at ISO 14001 or project acorn.

Posted By Suffolkman Its true that 14001 is voluntary ( though as i said not for high risk polluters who are governed by permit)- I see nothing wrong in that!
However the law remains the law which particular ones do you think are a mess
- The environmental protection act - The waste regulations - PPC - Energy saving requirements under the building regulations - The packaging waste regs - Emission trading
etc...
Please be specific then i will be happy to debate
