Posted By louise boyd Ok I passes my Nebosh Certificate last year and have an interview tommorow afternoon for a junior health and safety role. The requirements of the job are involve working ith the following standards ISO 9001 ISO 14001 OHSAS 18001 I have never even heard of these before they were covered in my NEBOSH course. Any help would be very much appreciated otherwise in going to look very stupid at this interview. Thanks in Advance

Posted By Simo 79 Don't worry too much about the standards. 9001 is a quality management system standard, 14001 is an environmental BS standard management system and OHSAS18001 is a health and safety management system standard. The British standards institute provide guidance document for implementing each of these standards and it is not rocket science following the guidance. The tricky bit is generally when you identify big gaps in the existing system and have to plug the gaps. Basically, buy the guidance document for each and have a read. Good look Simo

Posted By mark linton Possibly not - if it is a junior position they will probably not be expecting you to know these standards inside out but an awareness that they exist and what they are basically for. What they are most likely looking for is someone with the potential to develop into the role. I would suspect that a quick trawl of the internet would give you enough information of what the basics of these standards are and why they are important.

Posted By clarkey Louise What I would say is stay calm, be confident but don't lie. I would google any areas that you are not sure about and at least be able to string a couple of sentences together about each if asked. Listen to what they are asking you. I would try and prepare as much as possible by trying to pre empt some of the questions they may ask; Why do you want to work for us? What do you know about our company? What are your pet health and safety subjects? How did you get into health and safety? Just a couple of ideas. I would try to be positive in interview and have a few examples in your mind to back up what you are saying; I have worked well in a team etc and then provide an example as to when. I know that local councils / authorities like this kind of approach and you don't say what area you have applied into. Talk about what experiences and how you have put what you have learnt into practice since passing your exam even if you haven't been in a full time position. Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Posted By Chris Black Louise the standards and the duidance docs are very expensive, however if you are working in a company that subscribes to BS then maybe there is someone who is able to loan you copies of them. Best thing is not to lie-if you are googling for info then I advise that you are able to look at descriptions of the various clauses and identify the areas you know about from experience.

Posted By garyh Is there more to the job role description than this? A SO is normally rqeuired to be "out there" supporting people working safely, hence you need to know what the safe working procedures and principles are. Also solving problems to keep the job going but safely! Just telling people to follow paper rules and acting as Policeman used to be a SO's role 20 years ago. Not now. I would emphasise the supporting, problem solving side, mention the words "Contunual improvement" (essential to all SHEQ systems) and you should be fine..........!

Therefore I would expect the organisation to train you in the procedures that got them to the standard. the people interviewing you cannot expect you to know their organisations procedures before beginning your job. So long as you are aware of what the standards relate to and have a little knowledge of their existence i wouldn't worry. just to help you on, the ISO9000, has been up dated to the 2008 standard last december. if you mention that you are aware of the standard changing it may get you some extra brownie points.
