Posted By denpock After 26 years service with the Royal Air Force I am seeking employment in a role that is H&S biased, either on a permanent or temporary basis. Should such opportunities arise in the North East of England, I am immediately available. My employment background spans Electronic Engineering to Project Managing installation, repair and maintenance of electronically controlled electro-mechanical systems, including all the associated H&S, Quality Assurance and Environmental Protection responsibilities. Relevant Qualifications are listed below and my CV is available upon request. All opportunities will be considered. RAF Supervision of Quality and QMS Audit Skills. First Aid at Work (valid until 09 March 2010).

I would also miss out City & Guilds Graduateship Award in Leadership and Management (Level 6).off your CV
It seems to scare people I never had a job interview for the 1st 6 months while I had that on my CV removed it and got 2 I had NEBOSH construction fire environmental as well as HND elecronics 17 edition teaching certificate etc etc and there were no takes on my engineering background and I was a Chief Engineer
like I say very hard. I was lucky I am in a fire safety role now and I love my job Doing lectures Fire Safety etc the company I work for advertised for someone to do H&S last month and we had over 70 applicants we wanted someone with the Gen Cert and 14 of the applicants have Diploma's and experiance that is substantial, this is for a 18K job No i can Honestly say its grim up North at this time
i was lucky if i hadnt got my job i could have been homeless good luck
ohh and the CTP are all but useless make sure your CV is amazing and do your research beforehand so you can answer all questions at interview as one slip up will cost you
there are now 70 odd applicants for every job when i applied for mine there were only 17 that was Nov how times are changing all the factories closing the last of the ship firms and Nissan were it is skeliton hours 18k is good money now as these workers may have been on 30 they are now on 12 and an extra 6 k pays the bills
I tell it how it is do not come outside blinkered

I myself left the forces last year and was fortunate to get a job before I officially left. However the situation a year later is very different. Paul has spoken sense and I would agree with everything he has said.
There are so few jobs, but stay positive and keep plugging away. You only need one lucky break. I think that it is difficult to find any job not just health and safety ones. This will definitely test you as to whether this is a career you want to pursue.
Make sure that you network as much as possible via your IOSH branch meetings etc as with so few jobs and a number of them being 'false' this is probably the best way that you are going to find out about real job opportunities.
Also tailor your CV as to what the job specification etc says. I personally have several CV's. Do not be tempted to have a blanket CV. Stay away from military jargon where possible and try to refer to your 'transferable' skills. Do not be afraid about only putting on your CV the most appropriate qualifications for the job and removing those that aren't. I do not profess to be an expert in CV writing this is just my personal opinion.

Posted By denpock Thanks for the help, advice, email and general comments Folks; all very much appreciated. I suppose I must be a bit naïve; I certainly thought I would have more luck finding a suitable role. Then again, with the amount of notice I had to give, I wasn’t aware of the impending or perceived job market slump! Whilst I understand the advice given on the CV, I feel it is such a shame to remove certain aspects that should be indicative of the level people can work to, e.g. the C&G. Is there such a thing as being over-qualified? Why would it scare people? (Advice noted though)! As for making my CV more specific, well, I suppose my CV does read a bit like I’m a ‘jack-of-all-trades’; but isn’t that near the truth with employment in the Forces? I am actually hoping that having a broad range of experiences may get me the lucky break I need – watch this space – there is a role out there for me. I also accept that my ‘General Certificate’ may not get me to where I want to be. Unfortunately, the Diploma is only ‘pencilled-in’ for next year while I attempt to finish my OU degree this year! So I guess I’m going to be competing with the hordes of other candidates for suitable roles on the strength of ‘transferable skills’ for the short-term future. Anyway, thanks once again for the inputs and ‘Good Luck’ to everyone out there who are looking to gain employment or develop their careers. Dennis P

I do agree that it may seem a shame that after putting all of the hard work and effort in to them to then remove qualifications from your CV but trust me when I say that there is such a thing as being over qualified and this can scare potential employers off. Just make sure that you put the most appropriate qualifications on your CV for the job your applying for (whether health and safety or not).
Just be aware that your CV may have to go through rigorous HR sifts prior to actually getting to the Health and Safety Director who for example would make the decision on who to interview. Bear in mind that there are so many applications for one role they have to be very rigorous and may have certain criteria specific to the role even if you are more academically qualified in other areas.
Having said that though if you do get to interview the fact that you have done a batchelor of science will look very good and it won't necessarily go against you that you haven't got the NEBOSH diploma. I personally have done a pgc in occupational health and safety management and may decide to do the nebosh diploma in the future. I think that potential employers would also take into account the amount of health and safety experience you have already gained and how keen and enthusiastic you are about health and safety.
I do understand that it is a part of the forces culture to adapt and overcome and to crack on with whatever is asked of you, but civilian employers won't necessarily be aware of what skills are involved in your job unless ex-military themselves. You will have to point out what your skills are and where you can fit into the organisation and job role you are applying for. Do not take for granted any of the skills you have or assume that a potential employer will be able to read between the lines on your CV as to the skills you have.
Treat the first half of the first page of your CV like you are advertising a product and put in the buzz words they are wanting to hear. If you read the first page of your CV would you 'want to buy the product'? bad analogy I know but I think it is the best way to describe it. If you do not grab the potential employers attention within the first half of the first page you will potentially end up on the 'scrap' pile as there are plenty more for them to look at especially at the moment.
I know that this may sound harsh but I think that you need to be focusing your efforts and attention in the right way.

Will have to complete the application for the other one tomorrow - need a bath after football coaching in the rain - at my age! Posted By denpock After reading further posts in this forum offering advice to ex servicemenn, just thought I'd mention the demob training credit package I 'carry' with me which is intended to help me self-fund obtaining the NEBOSH H&S and /or the Environmental Management Diploma, (after completing my OU studies this year).
