I am moving to Oz in June, I have a 4 year sponsorship visa through my husband's employer so visa is no problem.

I have looked on lots of websites etc trying to get an idea of the market, I currently work in construction sector as H & S Advisor/CDM-C.

I am GradIOSH and have just submitted my IPD portfolio and hope to do the peer interview before I go so hopefully will be chartered.

Any advise from people who have worked in Oz would be great I see from job adverts that they require Cert IV, how does this compare to the NEBOSH Diploma etc.

Thanks Julie

Hi Julie

The first question would be, where in Aus. are you moving to ?

I have recently left there for a role in Singapore, but depending on where you plan to move to, I might have some contacts.

With regard to the cert iv you should have no problems in getting that. I have enclosed a link to work cover NSW, depending on which state you propose to work in, there are different state links.

I moved to Aus in Dec 07 and found no difficulty getting a position.

I used www.seek.com.au and www.mycareer.com.au to search for vacancies. Most positions need you to have a current work visa before they will allow you apply.

There is also the Safety Institute Australia which advertises vacancies however I am not sure if you need to be a member to access.

Hope this helps you,

Good luck

Thanks for the response. I am moving to Sydney.

Is the Safety Institute of Australia their version of IOSH? I was going to become a member as soon as I get there but wanted to wait until I was chartered IOSH here first.

Even if I have the Diploma and experience here will I still need to do the Cert IV? Do they require this as some sort of conversion?

Again any help would be great.

I joined the SIA years ago, and to be honest it was a waste of money, IOSH it certainly isn't.

Don't worry to much about the cert IV, with your UK qualifications employers will still look at you. You can do the cert. IV later.

One thing I would say is start looking now. It takes time, and sadly most people will not commit to you until you land. As Laura says the two links will give you all the jobs in Aus. without stating the obvious, the market is tight. Approach the big players directly, Bovis Lend Lease, Multiplex, Leighton, Westfield... etc. Most of those big companies have an online application process.

A couple of agencies to send your cv to.
Hays Construction, Evan Jones, evan.jones@hays.com.au

Hill McGlynn, Kim Soloman, kim@hillmcglynn.com.au

Josh Yin www.bbtglobal.com.au

David Turnbull, Constructive Recruitment, davidt@constructive.net.au

National Safety Council of Australia Ltd. Trevor Le Breton, trevor.lebreton@ncsa.org.au

CMHR, Maggie McKelvey, maggie.mckelvey@cmhr.com.au

Zenergy Recruitment, Dean Woods, dean@zenergyrecruitment.com.au

WSP, Steve Scott, steve.scott@wspgroup.com

There are others, like Laing O'Rourke who have offices there, but I don't have contact details for them.

As I said, get your CV to as many of these as you can ASAP, and give them a landing date, and more importantly a potential start date.

Let me know how you get on.

Peter

Great thread guys...

Does anyone have any experience in H&S in Adelaide?

I sent an email to SAFE WORK and this was the response:

Thank you for your email enquiry - there are no 'competency' requirements by law to work as an OHS professional in South Australia except for the appointment of a safety supervisor - an employer must ensure that a person holds the position of safety supervisor in respect of a construction site with 20 or more people involved in the performance of work at a particular time.

A person is not eligible for appointment as a safety supervisor unless the person is:
a) generally recognised as being competent in the work which is being undertaken at the construction site; and
b) has attended a course on occupational health and safety of not less than 12 hours duration; and
c) has at least 5 years experience in the building and construction industry; and
d) has adequate working knowledge of the SA Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Regulations

View the full Regulations here: http://www.legislation.s...5/CURRENT/1995.12.UN.PDF

Is this true?

www.hsepeople.com is the first website of its kind. A Social Networking site aimed specifically at Health and Safety People in all industries world wide. In Health and Safety the sharing of Information, Lessons Learned and best practise is very important. [reference removed] brings everything safety together in one place and makes it very easy to communicate with other HSE Professionals, Agencies, Companies, Suppliers, Trainers and Consultants.

Only 2 months old but with almost 1000 members and more joining every day, [reference removed] is a not for profit community site that aims to be a one stop shop for anyone working in HSE. On [reference removed] you can create a profile freely advertising your services and availability, Chat instantly with other members through the sites instant messenger or through the discussion forums. With hundreds of HSE jobs being listed from around the world on the RSS Feeds or from the many big agencies posting on the forums [reference removed] has more HSE Jobs than any other site on the Net.

Create a blog and let other keep up to date with what you are doing. If it is of interest to the community post it to the site magazine. [reference removed] also gives members the ability to create and manage their own group specific to whatever topic they choose and many agencies are taking advantage of this feature to create jobs groups.

If you are a HSE Trainer create an event and advertise course places. People can join your event and leave comments or ask questions. They can also view who else is attending your event and communicate with them.

The business directory page is now live and we will constantly be adding to it. If you work, recruit, train or consult in Health and Safety then your business can benefit by being on display to hundreds of the [reference removed] who are likely to use your services.

[reference removed] also allows members to upload safety videos and you can now download all the videos using the new Micro Feed option and watch them offline. Great for training purposes!

In the very near future we will be launching the document library. This will give any member the ability to upload, search, browse and download Safety Presentations, Procedures, Lessons Learned, Risk Assessments, Checklists, Toolbox talks. In fact any document relating to safety. No longer will you need to re-invent the wheel every time a new challenge presents itself. The chances are some one before you will have done it and you will be able to find it on www.hsepeople.com

The site is proving a huge hit and I hope to welcome you there soon
