Hi jono,

Well as for study progression you seem to be on the right path having completed the Cert and now embarking on the Diploma. Your 10 years construction experience is very marketable, and if i was you i would try go for the NEBOSH Construction Certificate - which seeing as you have done the General Certificate, would only be 1 exam plus practical assessment. That in my eyes would be a good path to follow.

In terms of a H&S career - the recession is hitting the number of H&S job vacancies. My personal advice to you if you are currently working in construction, would be to try enquire about the possibility of assisting any CDM Coordinators/H&S professional that may be working on the site for some health and safety experience. Even if this is just a few hours a week helping with inspections/assessments/
audits etc., it would provide you with some valuable insight into the occupation, and enable you to put some solid H&S experience on your CV. That said, applying for H&S jobs is the only way to get them and your current experience and study progression would help you with that.

All the best jono,

bereznikov

Honestly mate, it will not be easy! See my recent thread.

There appears to be a surfeit of H&S people about at the moment. I have heard examples of 40k pa CMIOSH taking 30k jobs to make ends meet. This means Grads and Techs being knocked on into mundane roles and basically freezing out new starters.

Companies are cottoning on to getting more for their money now it is their market!

They could advertise/ take on a tech or grad for 20k a year rather than a newbie right now.

I know this sounds cynical, but I am seeing/ hearing about it. I won't discuss who/ where in case anybody asks!

Good luck in any event.

Ian

Hi Jono - just to quote you here;

"Hi Professionals.Just Passed the nebosh cert,Been working in the construction industry for last 10yrs installing metal decking flooring.I am based in the north west"

May I ask - are you willing to relocate??
Your statement tells me that you are based in England - so state where you are willing to work.
I personally found your stated location annoying as you think everyone knows where the "north west" is.

Sorry for the rant but are you NW Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland? Where do you want to work?? Or shall we stay with NW??

Crikey!

The poster is asking for simple advice. Couldn't make out if you were being patriotic or pedantic there DH!

Jono,

Congratulations on passing the cert. Can't add much more than the excellent (constructive) posts by Ian and bereznikov. I have found that opening up your study / experience to different subjects can help in hard economic times like now. Many safety practitioners scoff at taking on extra responsibilities, however my experience in Quality & Facilities management has made my job a little bit more secure in these dark financial times.
