Hi All

I'm looking for advice, I have been authorised with a temporary work visa for Canada and in the UK I have worked in Health & Safety particularly in the construction and both public and private industries.

I would like to work in a health and safety environment in Canada but I am not sure where to start looking - are there any budding H&S enthusiasts or agencies out there who have had experience of this or can help?

Look forward to receiving any advice

Thanks, Catherine

I nearly ended up in Canada a couple of years ago for personal reasons and investigated the H&S market. Construction had a number of jobs if you wanted to work on the east coast (Toronto side) or in Vancouver. (The latter was due to the building work going on associated with the winter Olympics early next year, so might not be as busy now). Outside that there was not much work in construction although got a number of offers for jobs in Alberta (Calgary or Edmonton). These were mainly to do with oil, gas, mining or electrical power.

You will find that predominantly they do not recognise the NEBOSH / IOSH stuff unless you work for a larger organisation with a British input. That was where my offers were in Alberta as no-one else would accept the normal qualifications unless you accredited yourself to the Canadian equivalent.

There are a couple of websites that were quite good, such as www.simplyhired.ca or www.workopolis.com. They should help.

interesting info there.....
i spoke with a gentleman in The Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals yesterday as i have made an application to emigrate to Canada. he informs me that some time ago-possibly as long as 2 YEARS!- IOSH had been in talks with them in Canada and agreed to come up with some MOU-Memorandum of understanding- for various reasons as you can imagine. anyhow, the Canadians are still waiting for some comeback on that. What's taking so long i ask? the time frame is not an exaggeration as i remember speaking with someone at the same Canadian institution at least 2 years ago when i was beginning my research about emigrating.
so there you have it. i would gladly accept most positions there even outside of construction-where my main experience is-in order to get in to Canada-and Alberta and British Columbia will do me nicely.
there are a lot of websites out there with info and i have spent a fair bit of time trawling through them. so, visas are all well and good to get in there but picking your spot could be something else. realistically the mining idea sounds good and interesting as it doesn't seem like a huge move from construction for employers to understand, and that is an issue as well. i have started on my "resume'" which I'm reliably informed needs to be achievement focused, so onward and upward.
and that's just a little from my short experience of looking for work in happy Canada. more info or leads etc will of course be gladly accepted

Thanks for all the responses and direct emails with lots of good advice. It certainly is a bit of a challenge - but one that will be worth it.
