Posted By Ian G Hutchings Hi I'd take a look at the IOSH guidance "Getting help with health and safety" as a starting point. The guidance generally recommends that consultants should be CMIOSH. You will need to ensure that there is a real market for your services, not an assumed one, as the current market is very competitive. Before taking things further it is essential that you undertake some market research and develop a business plan. Most banks have business plan templates. Cashflow is critical, unless you have loads of free funds to spare, you'll need to work out where your money will come from (working capital) until the business can provide cashflow to meet your costs. All the best Ian

Posted By Safe System This isn't a stab agaisnt anyone but can i add that i know some VERY experienced consultants (one of which trains members of the HSE and have been in the docks on a number of occasions - and none of them are Chartered IOSH members or in fact members at all. They have years of experience in Health & Safety and have probably forgot more than most have learnt. So it is just a guidance written by IOSH but not a standard. So don't let it hold you back. You will find work out there, and very quickly as long as you have a couple of good contacts. BTW: Yes i am a member of IOSH and I do see the benefit of having it.
