Can anyone help?
I am actively seeking immediate employment within a commutable distance from Lincoln.

I have been involved in and have studied Health and Safety for the past five years, and am qualified with the NEBOSH Construction Health and Safety Certificate. I now intend to take the Diploma, which is being totally funded by the RAF.
During my study time, I have been very proactive in gaining more and more experience including time spent in Qatar. Here I carried out site surveys and risk assessment analysis of large industrial electrical substations, with the leading European electrical contractor ABB. I am currently undertaking further work experience with a local Lincolnshire H&S Consultancy.

I would welcome and advice or help with my search! Many thanks

Re: Funding.

Also ex-RAF and having the Diploma part funded by the scheme, I feel that it should be pointed out that the scheme pays a maximum of £2000 (or £1000) depending on which part is qualified for, up to 80% of the costs.

I get £2k from the scheme but am self funding the remaining £3k plus not being paid for days out of work for the course.

Good luck to whoever else is doing the course :)

John re your CV:

Have you attended the CTP workshop or had your resettlement advisor look at it? If they are not providing you the support you need then ask to change adviser. Make sure you use them - I'll not claim they will open all the doors but they are free and some of them are excellent at improving things like your CV and interview skills.

Yes thanks! and am on my second advisor!!! CTP is a bit of a waste of time as they only seem to teach you to suck eggs ( my opinion only ) For example an advisor said to me, " my best advice for you is to type HEALTH AND SAFETY JOBS into, this THING called Google" "Its dead good"........... Priceless stuff ehh!!!!!

John,

Are you still in the Service or on terminal leave? I am the SHSA for RAF Scampton, if you can contact me via the service email system or phone, I am more than willing to help. I left the RAF over 5 years ago and may be able to give you some pointers.

Have you changed any service phrases/posts to civilian ones, it is easy to confuse potential employers using the wrong lingo. If you have done any of the promotion courses or have been responsible for other personnel, these can be put on the cv to broaden your appeal.

As is often the case on this forum, the desire within IOSH to protect SHP advertising revenue is paramount. I had responded to your posting in a way i considered compatible with the AUG's but apparently not! I really do think it is time that IOSH reviewed the 'member to member' type of dicsussions about possible work which is VERY different to the posting of jobs in this forum by agencies and recruitment consultants.
If you want to contact me direct we can discuss.

I work for a health & safety training company and speak to people in your situation on a weekly basis

One of the websites I usually recommend for jobs is www.shp4jobs.co.uk

I hope you find something soon

I have noticed that everyone seems to be going for the NEBOSH Diploma which a superb qualification but is very expensive and also very time consuming as you have to spend a lot of time at a training center

Has anyone considered the NVQ Level 4 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice? This is practically the same as the Diploma

Basically it is as good as the diploma but cheaper and less time consuming

You build up a work based portfolio instead of spending hours on end at a training center which is far more beneficial to a lot of people

If you can only get up to £2k funding then that's fine as it will cover all course costs

If anyone wants to find out more then please call me on 0115 9849950 or email me at nikki@associatedtraining.co.uk and I will be happy to help

Many Thanks
Nikki

Hi

Not sure if this is up your street or not, but there is now funding for a workplacement of up to 3 months in businesses - where by you draw a wage and prove your worth or create your self a job.

Going off track a little and carrying on from the previous post, if any service leavers are considering the NVQ you could use this work experience/placement to complete any NVQ work previously unable to be done in the MOD. With the ELCAS, work placement wages it may help get you to where you want to be... Then don't forget to look for local funding which could assist you further, either via the councils, LSC or regional development agency.

Yorksire & NE Lincs seems to be doing pretty well with 60% across the board and 50% in Hull plus the work placement scheme.....

Best of luck to you.

regards

Linda

John

SHP this month had adverts for the MOD civil service (also on the MOD website) for safety advisors for the Air Cadets. The main office for the ACT is at RAF Cranwell, so just down the road from you.

It might not be a dream job but in the current climate it’s a good foot in the door, also it would mean that in the future you could internally transfer to a station health and safety advisers job (See Andy Cousens).

It also means your working in a familiar environment and you still get to go the Mess for lunch.

Good luck

Phil

Hi John,
There are specific sites that may be useful to ex-service personnel, please contact me off-line and I will e-mail you the web links.

If not directly useful at the moment for getting you into H&S work, as there are no H&S jobs on there at the moment, there may be something else that grabs your eye.

Cracking result, I did my cert down at Plymouth CFE on resettlement and haven't really looked back. Did my diploma at Ipswich College and am also doing an NVQ! I got a job at an Local Authority which has proved to be all sorts of things at times, including frustrating but also very rewarding at times. It's interesting work with a diverse range of risks.

I hope that all goes well for you in the future, good luck. There is life after uniform.

Oops for the typo.

Exactly, the Snowdrops best friend has to come along - the pooch has more charisma.

The dog also knows the way home.
