I am currently studying my Nebosh National General Certificate part time in Lisburn NI,(exams start in 4 weeks) and am looking to gain experience in H&S.
I come from a production background and am part of the H&S committee at work.
A previous employer has been good enough to let me help out with his H&S doing the risk assessments.
I am determined to get a career in H&S but would appreciate all the help I can get.
I live in the South Down area in N.I. but am willing to travel any distance.

I am also planning to do the following course

Manual Handling Instructors Course

can any one who has done this let me know how beneficial this has been.. and what other short courses would be of benefit..

Although currently working full time I would love the opportunity to work along with someone qualified to show me the ropes and help me gain the experience I need..

any hours any distance anytime .....
I have a place to stay in Claphan on a long term basis if it helps

Gerry,

You are in the unfortunate position of trying to get in to Health and Safety during a down turn where people are getting paid off and wages are being driven down in certain industries.

My advice to you is to try and gain some experience with a Company in your spare time by shadowing an advisor for free.

The preferred method would be to do it for your present employer as they already know how committed you are and although there may not be a position at present I bet you would get first dabs when a position does become available.

It's not easy but good luck.

Thanks B, but unfortunately the company I work for has about 60 employees and 2 full time health and safety officers.. as for shadowing or doing it free this is something I would be prepared to do and understand it is probably the only choice open to me at present...the problem finding people in my area prepared to let me do this..

Gerry, take a look at the following link: http://www.iosh.org/inde...um=2&thread=44177&page=1 it's amazing what can happen when you offer your services for free. There is always someone out there who is good enough to give you a helping hand up.

Why not give it a try, what do have to loose?
