I have 5 years experience in manufacturing & engineering H&S (NEBOSH Dip) & had planned to move into construction in the future
Impending redundency may be a good career move.
Can anyone advise the best way of transferring into this field?
I have no formal construction experience except for labouring many years ago.
Are there any courses which are mandatory to get onto site?
Any advice on the best route would be appreciated

Posted By Jay Joshi I am not too sure you need to complete the NEBOSH Construction certificate as with your NEBOSH Diploma you have should have covered most of the contents, unless you feel the need for a "refresher". Instead, you may be better off doing the CITB site safety course as that deals more with the details of the site construction processes and safety. However, nothing is better than first hand experience. You could use your local IOSH Branch and network with fellow construction professionals and try to get some work experience. Construction is very difficult to get in right now, unless you have experience, especially in civil engineering for contractors involved in PFI. The majority of contractors involved in commercial work are cutting back, from fit out / house building / reactive & planned maintenance for private sector works.
The NEBOSH Construction Cert is a practical course which gives you a more practical insight into construction health and safety, than the dip in my opinion.CITB Courses are good but a bit expensive.
Construction will improve on the whole again - but it may take a year for some movement on the jobs front.
You would be better staying where you are right now.
