Posted By maxmillan maddy Hi Guys Filling out a job application can be a daunting task at times. I am applying for this job in london, and I'm required to put in some additional information based on the skills and abilities required to do the job. What would you do if you realise you fall short of some the skills and abilities? Would you decide not to proceed or get on with it regardless. Please let me know. Thanks

Posted By Tommo123 I would still apply as you have nothing to loose. You may have some skills in other areas that the employers are looking for. If you are deemed not qualified enough you most probably wont get a interview, however if you do get the interview they will have obviously seen something in you . You can't win if you don't take part. Good Luck

Posted By Brian Peirce Try to consider whether you can demonstrate some of the skills and experience via your private life. e.g. leadership, communication - member of a club or parent. Often these skills are used every day in non work activities and reference to this via the application form can be sufficient to meet the criteria.

Posted By clairel Job descriptions etc are the ideal not necessarily the standard they will be able to acheive. Apply, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Big up your strengths, admit your weknesses (we all have them) and you can't do more than that. As some may know I am trying to change career and I had a lenghty chat with a man who is a chair of a particular organisation. I asked him how to get a first step in the industry when I have no experience and his advice was to do what he did, write to every possible company in the area offering my services and if just one is successful then that is enough and if not then you have lost nothing. Be brave.

Posted By AMelrose Agree with the others - give it a go as you might well have other skills and attributes that others applying might not have which will get you an interview and don't sell yourself short. As someone else said, if you have led a Scout camping expedition or something, use that as shows you have hobbies etc outside the workplace and would probably be a good team player etc... Good luck!

Posted By June-bug maximillian, Just apply, I have applied for so many jobs where I 'fell short of the role' on paper. Funny enough they seemed to be jobs I got interviews for. Sometimes now I apply for jobs out of my scope and have managed to get interviews too - I am always looking for that elusive 'perfect role!' This is how I got into safety to begin with - began as a DSE assessor now going on to do my masters.......the rest as they say is history! What I've done on some applications is mention the fact that I don't have practical experience in the area in question, but I then give a positive example of how I can overcome this e.g. Although I have no practical experience in....I had no practical experience in...but was able to carry out the tasks due to the knowledge I have of..... This is just an example, you don't necessarily have to mention it at all. If you like the job apply, forget about it, and if they like what they see and your drive and personality comes across well, they will make time to see you.
