Hi everyone, I notice that there are alot of people looking for work or considering starting up consultancies.

In my area (East Anglia) the H&S spend of most companies has been slashed by around 35% with only the essentials being paid out.

Companies are more open to taking on risk as there is little realisation of large profit margins

Most companies have worked out that penalties are linked to profits, less profits = less payouts in court

Please do not see this as a pessimistic view just reality, those who want to start up good luck and be careful of what you are walking into, those who are looking for work in fulltime employment beware as you may have to take on more responsibility for less money

If anyone disagrees please post or add your experiences to the thread, it would be good to see what is happenning around the country

I was formerly self employed and know how awful getting those first jobs to set you on your way is. Few of us in safety are sales people so it is so hard - worse than hard. I am now employed and we are based in the West Midlands and I am getting calls on a daily basis from people offering me their services for health and safety, safety and environmental training - you name it - I'm getting cold calls about it.

I think for all those going self employed dont see it as a panacea for all your woes. It has been said time and time again on this forum - do your homework and check the local market - what have you got that all the other consultants have not got?

I agree with you, things in East Anglia have slowed down dramatically.
I was speaking to the guy that replaced me in my last role, and his hours for the role have been slashed to 16 per week with the rest being made up elsewhere within oher parts of the business.

Interested in your figures Stephen, reference the 35% reduction in H&S budgets - how do you know that.

I ask because I'm a member of a consultancy in East Anglia which since November until the last four or five weeks or so, has experienced a substantial increase in clients - none of it as a result of clients reducing safety staff.

And which gives us the impression that spending on H&S is increasing!

East Anglia has a marked slow down... I reside on the Norfolk/Suffolk border and decided to take a role with a 140 mile commute.

I don't find this too unreasonable but better than a daily train commute to London with previous (lower salary) employer!
