Posted By L J Having completed my fdsc in Health,Safety and Environmental management i'm currently looking for a trainee/assistant position. Have done a fair bit of work for a local consultancy (un-paid) to get a bit of experience but still finding it difficult to land a job.
One area that interests me is asbestos surveying/consultancy and there seems to be a fair few positions locally. I have time to gain a bit of experience in the field if i can find somewhere willing to have me shadow them but will obviously need to complete the p402 course as a minimum to be considered for a position.
Does anyone know where its possible to do the course in north wales?? Any input on the best way to go about this would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Posted By Chris L If you're willing to travel a little further afield, Connaught Compliance out of Caerphilly may be a good place to start. You can certainly do your 402 with them.
Having spent the thick end of 20 years in this field, it's certainly been interesting, but not always well-paid or particularly easy!
Things are better now, but there are still enough cowboys about, willing to exploit trainees and newly qualified people. It's tricky to give general advice, as I don't really know the companies in that part of the world, but you wouldn't go far wrong getting a start with Connaught or one of the other national consultancies.
Hope this helps a bit, and good luck!

Posted By Dave Wilson If you want a h&S position a 3 day P402 would be the basic requirement for a new asbestos surveyor, if you want to get into asbestos management then an s301 is the jobby mate!

Posted By L J Thanks for the replies, I'll get in touch with Connaught and see what they say, they apparently do courses in Liverpool which isn't too far to travel.
As far as choosing which course to take, i was thinking of starting with the P402 as i would be going for a basic role due to lack of experience, then hopefully completing the s301 whilst in employment.
If however completing the s301 means there is no need to do the 402 i suppose it would be best to take that route?.....

Posted By Chris L If you obtain S301+CCP (Oral) you don't need to complete the individual 'P' courses. I would recommend some practical experience before you tackle the S301 though: it is possible to pass without it, but as it covers 'a bit of everything' it would be easier with a few months under your belt.
Neither the 301 0r 402 will teach you much about asbestos management though - for that you need P405* though again there is no substitute for experience. Depends on how much time & money you have available really.
*(I would argue that despite it's title, 405 doesn't teach you much about management either, but that would begin to sound like the ramblings of a bitter old analyst......)

Posted By L J Cheers for that Chris, think i'll go with the original plan then, get the P402 out of the way and start looking for a surveyor position.
Hopefully if I can get a little experience aswell i'll be in with a shot.

Posted By CW With the P402 you have to complete two field surveys within 6 months, that is easily done but once you have submitted them you are in the hands of BOHS and when I did mine I think it took them around 4 months after submission of the reports to issue the certificate.
