Does any fellow member (who is employed on a FULL time basis) ever offer there services on a part-time basis? i.e. writing a policy, writing up a risk assessment etc.. for companies on the side?

I'm thinking of doing this in my area of expertise to make some extra money and build experience.. but wanted to see if anyone has tried this? Does time permit? is it possible?!

Pros & Cons? - Discuss

Thanks All!

Luke - are you serious?
If I was to approach my employer with that idea I shudder to think of the consequences! Not enough to do? So clever I can manage to do quicker than what others are doing? I would be told to go and do my own thing - but in my own time!

He is not paying me to work for others - loyalty and common sense spring to mind here!

Do it in your own time at home if you wish - but think about the insurance point of view?

Dave - the point of my thread was to do it in my own time! - probably should of made that clear!
Probably on weekends (when i'm not working!)

Hmm.. insurance... good point.. probably leave it for now!

Some employment contracts would specifically bar you from doing other work that is in any way connected with the main employment, whilst others stipulate that other work can only be done with the express authority of the main employer. I have no knowledge as to whether these clauses are legally enforceable but...

As an employer if I discovered that "foreigners" were being done by my workforce I would be very unhappy for a number of possible reasons: my reputation, my business being stolen, my employees unfit through overwork, my equipment/tools/materials, questionable loyalty, potential assumed liabilities etc.

The employment status of anyone doing that to me would be very quickly reviewed.

Luke,

Have a look at code point 1 of the Code of Conduct. See http://www.iosh.co.uk/fi.../about/CodeofConduct.pdf

Luke,
It is possible. I am in a full time role, but have undertaken training, policy writing etc in my own time, following recommendations, word of mouth etc and before anybody asks, no I do not have a life ;-)

This is with the understanding and support of my current employer as they are in no way connected to H&S so not 'poaching' work from them.

Any contracts I have obtained have always been in a support role (review of policies etc) and if audits / training required, always undertaken outside of work, weekends / evening and holidays.

But ensure you obtain the correct level of PI insurance.

Arran, as regard to code of conduct as stated above I do not see any breach?

Regards

Rob35

Rob,

I never said there was a breach, however if things start to go pear-shaped in the future, then Code Point one may then apply. Pro-active use of the code.
