Stephen, job titles rarely give the whole picture with regards to what the job entails, so some companies may require their "safety adviser" to have responsibility for a large number of sites and accountability at Board level whilst others may be part of a team with much lower levels of responsibility (and usually pay).

I would suggest therefore that job titles should be treated as just something that appears on a piece of paper. A job description should give a better indication but that too may not give a true picture of what the job really involves. It is often the case that a safety role is developed and redefined by the individuals doing that job once they discover what is actually needed.

The term safety officer sometimes implies a job of in-house enforcement but equally can apply to one where advice is given whilst co-ordinator can sometimes refer to a starter role of managing documentation, other times at a higher level. Others will have different views. QED.

So, to your question. My answer is Yes, they can be different or the same!
