I am taking a year off work to do a Masters (not in H&S). I estimate I should have one day a week to earn some 'pin' money so to speak.

I am chartered with IOSH, have experience as an enforcer for the HSE and the last 5 years as a consultant (employed by a consultancy). I have asked my current employer about keeping me on for just one day a week but at the moment they are not responding and so I am looking at what other options there are.

If anyone has any ideas about where I could get work for one day a week (sometimes more in the holidays) then I would appreciate your thoughts. Equally if anyone knows of any work for one day a week the please let me know.

I live in Yorkshire but will be travelling to Leicestershire throughout the week so geographical area could be quite wide.

One last sting in the tail though is that at the end of my Masters I will be leaving the field of health and safety and so I am not keen on setting up as a consulant on my own as I would then have to let the clients down by terminating any contracts wthin a year.

Thoughts appreciated.

I did have my contact details up but when I got no response I hid them again. I don't routinely leave my details up anymore following an offensive email originating from this forum.

Still looking for part time work. I check this website most days and so anyone wishing to contact me can leave a message.

Thanks

Without contact details, it is nigh on impossible for anyone to help you without being in breach of the Acceptable Use Guidelines.

Credit to you regarding not setting up as a consultant for fear of letting the clients loose- admirable indeed.

Without knowing your field of expertise it is hard for me to guide you.

I being from the construction sector have seen many SHEQ Managers in this industry working on reduced weeks, in fact some are on one day- how content you will be with this offer is another thing.

Another avenue I would advise explored- established consultancies- why not give those based in your area and work your way out to see what the feeling is there.

As a last resort, why not give the agencies a call- I know funds may not be as generous compared to if you went solo.

Regards

Lee

PS I wouldn't let one person's actions put you off revealing your email, I do recall the thread when you first highlighted this, but I have had mine visible for several years now and I have yet to receive anything like what you were hit with- but who knows this could change....v quickly!!lol

Not had any ideas or leads yet. Still looking.

If anyone knows which consultancies still use associates for ad hoc work then I would appreciate a nudge in the right direction.

Thanks

Hi

The problem you may have here is one of continuity. You only have one day a week available, so this could be seen as a lack of flexibility when trying to set work up (from the consultancy's perspective as clients often want to set the dates). Also, you are going to leave the profession when you have completed your MSc. I'm afraid as an employer/consultancy this doesn't sound like an attractive proposition. Sorry to come across as negative, just my thoughts. I often look for flexible associates who can quite quickly offer time and support who I can build a long term relationship with.

I apreciate your concerns, which are understandable.

The one day a week is an approximation, sometimes I may have more time available sometimes less, depending on deadlines and term times.

Other than actual lecture time, which is limited to 2 specific days per week, my time is mine to arrange around my study and earning money.

I admit that in one years time I will probably leave the generalist H&S profession but with all the best intentions there may not be the work and my Masters is not completely removed from the H&S profession. I'm not a good long term prospect for anyone, but then associates rarely are in my experience.

I'm quite experienced and well qualified and ad hoc audit and training work shouldn't necessitate continuity of consultant.

So all I can do is hope for the best and seek work where I can. I can survive without getting any work but life would be much easier with a bit coming in and it would be good to keep my hand in too.

its not just the amount of time you have its also what you get paid for that time

You noted you needed 'pin money'; as you may have to insure yourself, if you go the self employed /consultancy route, 'pin money' may not pay the policy costs!
Best of luck

Some people seem to be in a negative mode today.

I appreciate the problems I'm just trying to see if there is a way of me earning a bit of money on the side of my studies utilizing my exisiting skills. I can't see what is wrong with trying to do that.

If anyone has any suggestions then I appreciate that. If not then I am aware of the constraints and pitfalls thank you.
