Best positioning of HS team in relation to modern safety management

Posted By Michael Hosking Hi Myself and fellow IOSH colleague form the HS team for a large international Finance company, 1,000+ employees.
We deal with all aspects of HS providing full in house consultancy service and being primarily office based activities we have concentrated on and are well experienced in the more health side of health and safety.
We are currently located within the facilities management department and I feel this is inappropriate in light of main business as usual daily function and the modern emphasis on people as opposed to premises. I am currently formulating a business plan with the intention of moving HS team from FM to the people division which includes, HR,Training, Comms team etc.
It would be most useful if I can include the ratio of fellow HS professionals in similar companies who are located within
1. HR 2. People Divisions 3. Facilities management 4. Other
If you are willing to assist just respond with type of organisation, (name if you wish I will not disclose it) and appropriate number as per my list above
Thanks in anticipation
regards MIke

Posted By Bob Youel In my opinion H&S should be where the most important area is and thats 'finance'or even 'risk management'
I see H&S as looking after the total health and safety of a business and directors etc always look at £ first!

I go along with Bob, our H&S sit in Risk Management; along side Corporate Risk, Insurance and Business Continuity/Resillience. It works well for us.

Posted By Bill Elliott Michael - in my organisation H&S sits with the rest of the team (Occ Health, Fire, Security) in Human Resources. Annoyingly Risk management sits in another directorate linked to Healthcare Standards as part of the Nursing Directorate. Whereas the Occ Health & Safety team work well together, sitting outside of Risk doesn't make too much sense. I have in the past been with Facilities in the Estates Directorate and that had its problems too.

Posted By Brian Rudge I'm lucky in that I'm in a relatively small (in numbers) organisation although large in terms of infrastructure , money and 'customers'. I started soon after the organisation was created and successfully argued to answer directly to the CEO. Whilst this might not be appropriate for larger organisations you need to answer directly to someone who reports directly into, or is on, the Board. Ideally the person should be the company nominee with responsibility for safety at Board level.

Posted By Kevin Drum Mike I currently work as H&S manager in a college/university campus. Approx 350 staff and we sit in the FM team, which I feel works well as much of the FM work around property does in the end impact on people and being part of that team I don't tend to get the 'we will do it that way to save time/money - but don't tell the H&S guy'
