High everyone,i'm just starting out on the health and safety route by doing Nebosh general certificate,what are the career prospects like with just this qualification?
Any information will be gratefully accepted.

With just a General Certificate, I think there is very few prospect ahead.I would recommend you to complete at least your diploma.

At the moment, prospects are not good for most people. Plenty of people with better qualifications and experience struggling to find work at the moment.

Don't be disheartened by the comments above. Yes the general certificate is the basis for your Health & Safety career.
You haven't mentioned what field of H&S you want to get into and your previous experience, for example, a construction site foreman with 25 years experience with the general cert would more suitable for a position than a person with one year site experience and the diploma.
Experience is a vital part of being a competent health and safety professional and not just passing the exams which build your depth of knowledge.
I took the leap into Safety a few years ago where I was working as a section engineer on civil engineering projects. I completed the Nebosh General, 9 months later when an internal vacancy came up, I transferred across to the safety department. I knew the company procedures, I had a wealth of experience on site, the company knew I was hard working so the transfer was easy.
Prospects are good in my view.

I agree with Neil. A large percentage of my NGC students are taking on their first job "in house". Many employers like the fact that they know the systems and that they also know them and the way they work. Having NGC or higher qualification is not always the clincher, the right place at the right time is.
I recommend getting the NGC and pushing your employer for H/S responsibilities. Once you have the foot on the ladder then go for a Diploma or NVQ4 (please, please don't ask which is the best. There have been many discussions and bun fights over that question, so don't go there, for the love of humanity. What counts is what counts for you).
Whilst doing the/a Diploma/NVQ4 you will be gaining experience. I recommend a minimum of 3 years before moving onwards and upwards.
