Posted By juliehughes7676 I have recently moved to Sydney on my husbands 457 visa so am intitled to work.
I have been working in the construction industry for a consultancy for the past 5 years and have been undertaking CDM and H & S Consultancy. I have been in Sydney since August and am finding the market out here really tough. I have been applying for suitable roles and not getting the interviews. I don't know if this is because of the lack of jobs or the fact that I do not have any NSW experience. They ask for a degree here or Cert IV (which is equivalent to the NEBOSH Diploma) which I have.
If anyone knows of people hiring or general advise would be welcome.
Julie

Posted By Luke. Julie,
Have you tried the Australian safety forums - they are very useful?
If not, there is a chap that posts on here who is from Australia who works in H&S (not construction but very helpful)

Posted By AndrewJO Hi Julie, I imagine that your prospects would be better in WA or Queensland, where there are quite a few large projects in the works and where construction exp. would be considered more valuable. Having said that, the mining sector employees many safety professions in these two States. I wouldn't imagine that the Cert IV would be the equivalent to the NEBOSH Diploma. The Cert IV is pretty basic. I've mentioned it before; I don't think employers in Australia would appreciate what NEBOSH is all about, so I would suggest that you simply refer to the qualification as a Diploma of OHS. You could consider doing a Cert IV in Workplace Assessment and Training. Many safety roles have a significant training aspect, so the qualification would be well received by employers. If you think that employers may be hesitant to employee someone with little exp. in the Australian safety context, then you could consider doing couple units from an Australian postgraduate safety course, perhaps a law subject and a general OHS subject. UNSW has a safety school with a wide range of courses and subjects: http://www.riskandsafety.unsw.edu.au/Hope that things look up. Andrew
