What course in Health and safety do you feel would help me to get on in the H&S world. I have the NEBOSH general Cert, PG Cert in Risk Safety Management and the TUC Cert in Occupational H&S, and still cant get a job. Is there a course that would help me to attract a potential employer. My current role is H&S Team Leader and Union Safety Rep, but just feel my career is at a stand still. Any advice would much appreciated.
Cheers David.

You should have done the NEBOSH Dip rather than the Postgraduate Cert.

At least with the dip, you would have had a qual that is immediately recognised by employers UK wide.

I hate to be harsh but another course on what you already have won't get you the break.

You need to build up your experience and hope to find an employer who will take a chance on you.

I was in the same position as you 10 years ago NEBOSH and TUC Cert and I was lucky enough to find work.

I'm now employed in H&S and CMIOSH, proving you can make the leap from safety rep to full time safety officer.

If you need any more advice email me.

Good Luck.

This is just my opinion, but I would play down the TU aspects. In my experience TU reps and TU trained people are often seen as being negative "problem finders" and this bias may affect your chances of gaining an interview etc.

We have employed people with PG Certificate and various other equivalent qualifications instead of NEBOSH Diploma.

As regards Union involvement, tailor your CV to accentuate the positive relationships with management, noting that research indicates that organisations with TU reps and Safety Cttees on average have accident incident rates of 50% of those that don't - indirect correlation as generally larger organisations who probably, on average manage all aspects of their business better.

Good luck, Peter

The Nebosh Diploma would certainly help however have you considered the NVQ Level 4 in Occupational Safety & Health. If you are already in a health & safety role this may be of interest as it helps develop your skills while in the workplace and therefore increase your experience. it is also evidence based and so there are no exams and can complete at your own pace (more or less).

I agree with Peter G use your union experience positively.

Highlight any areas you have worked "with" management to achieve a positive outcome.

Don't be ashamed of your union involvement if you come across as professional and committed then it should stand you in good stead.

When I got my first break in health and safety I asked my new boss why they chose me over more senior candidates, he said it was due to my enthusiasm and passion for the subject.
