Like all other risk assessments, COSHH assessments depend, among other things, on the environment and the individual - for instance an asthmatic will have different critical levels than a non-sufferer. Two rooms next door to each other, one with a window and one without, will require to be assessed separately. Just as an example, an assessment for methane will depend on whether it is present in a landfill site or a sewage pipe. There are plenty of Safety Data Sheets available on the net (try the Oxford University Chemistry site), but the actual assessment requires local knowledge of how the substance is used Richard

Posted By Andrew Blair Dear Richard & Nick Thanks for your responses. I agree that issues specific to the environment and activity must be considered when preparing COSHH assessments. I think what I should be looking for are Safety Data Sheets with information on the chemical & biological effects of materials. These safety data sheets would then help me prepare the COSHH assessment for the activity/construction site. If you know of any other sources of material safety data sheets, please tell me.
