Posted By Nick Higginson Has anyone else heard that from today, Safety Reps are entitled to serve a "Union INspection Notice" on employers? See hazards magazine or Risks e-zine for more details. Anyone got any thoughts? Nick

Posted By Dr. Andrew Rankine It seems to me that this Notice procedure is promoted by the TUC so as to make Safety Reps lives a bit easier. The guidance on how to use the form is quite clear that the procedure is to be used only after normal communications have failed to resolve a safety issue. It is not new legislation, and there is no change to Safety Reps powers. IMHO, if used sensibly it could be quite helpful, but it does tell you that management/union relationships may have become a bit strained.

Posted By Ashley Williams Nick, Do you mean provisional improvement notices issued by the WSA pilots, or Safety reps rights to inspect under regulation 5 of the SRSC 1977? Also which edition of Hazards are you refering to? Thanks Ashley.

Posted By Nick Higginson Ashley, Neither. There is details on the TUC website and in the latest Hazards Mag (I think it's out today). It doesn't mention any HSE backing, but does say that they could be used in a court of law. Nick

Posted By Robert Woods Nick, A safety rep has always been able to contact the HSE if they feel H&S law is being flouted and they have always been encouraged to put complaints about safety in writing if a verbal complaint has no immediate effect. Most unions provide stationary designed specifically for this purpose. This could be used as evidence in any future prosecution. It seems to me that UIN's are the TUC's feeble attempt to redress the fact that Safety Reps have no chance of getting the right to serve PIN's. If you look at TU safety reps training then they have been tought to do exactly what the UIN procedure sets out but have been given a "special" form to fill in. What will the TUC do next surely not a watered down version of Roving Safety Reps? Now that would be ridiculous. The "Bad Employers" must now be quaking in their boots.
