At this time of year our staff in the Arboretum have to dig up new trees to be relocated. The problem we have is the area the trees are grown in is tight for space hence it os not practical at the present time to use power tools. The root balls have to be lifted manually. We are after ideas or aids that will make this task less onerous. May someone knows of a netting system we could sue to pass that will hug the root ball while we pass scaffold poles through a purchase point. Any suggestions please!

Nick,
Can I suggest you contact the Royal Horticultural Society's HQ at Wisley. They have specialist staff who move large plants regularly and should be able to help you.
They do have a website which is on www.rhs.org.uk and this should be able to give you contact details.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Martin.

A mini Kubota digger would do the job and are available from hire centres. the time you save will probably pay for the hire costs.
They are not much wider than a person and will solve a lot of your manual handling problems.
Robert Woods.
