Posted By Phil Brazier Construction Skills Certification Scheme, can anyone enlighten me about this scheme? Will it become compulsory on large construction sites for visiting technical reps? Where will training be available and what are the likely costs?

Posted By Peter J Harvey The CSCS is run by CITB for specific trades, this does not include gas fitters, electricians and a range of others who have other accredited schemes. Members have to have industry accreditation, apprenticeship, NVQs etc and re-qualify on a 5 year basis, with an approved H&S course. I would not say it will become an industry standard as there are so many schemes around, this is just one. Contact CSCS on 01485 578777 and they will send you an information booklet.

Posted By Colin Reed Hi Phil, The CSCS scheme is one of the industry competence standards recognised and demanded by the Major Contractors Group and most of the largest Construction Clients in the country. There are not many CSCS categories left that can be attained via industry accreditation now, with most "Experienced Worker" candidates having to complete an On-Site based NVQ in order to gain the award for life.(renewable every 5 years only after successful completion of a computer based H&S test) The CITB provide generous grants to off-set the cost of the NVQ process and further funding can in certain cases be accessed from other appropriate sources. We are an accredited provider of this scheme and are fully aware of all the potential pitfalls and bonuses from entering into it. If I can be of any help regarding costs, funding or general info please call during business hours on 01223 863363 regards Colin Reed

Posted By Jay Joshi The Major Construction Group (MCG) of the Construction Confederation, as a part of improving the safety record in construction has recently launched a "policy" document of standards expected on their sites. There is a lot of emphasis on the "card certification" schemes. They also propose to integrate the card schemes. So sub-contractors can expect clients to stipulate the requirement

Posted By James Meredith The CSCS scheme has also been expanded to include Managers at different levels including Site Managers and Contracts Managers. This is intended to help ensure that those in charge of planning and management of construction work have a minimum standard of competence to do so. As Peter Harvey has already advised, contacting the help desk on 01485 578777 is a good place to start. However it should be remebered that CSCS is not a legal requirement but providing adequate training is and having CSCS will not necessary ensure that this duty has been complied with. Aditional training will be required for specific tasks such as with scaffold inspections.

Posted By Robert K Lewis Please also be aware that there is talk of the providers of different schemes to take the MCG decision re CSCS only policy to the Office of Fair Trading as a restrictive practice Bob

Posted By Frank Cooper Phil, You may also wish to have a look at the CCNSG Safety Passport Training Scheme organised by the ECITB. Have a look at the following website which gives all the details. www.ecitb.org.uk. Whilst this doesn't necessarily deal with construction it is an acceptable passport in some cases as the training is not too disimilar. Frank Cooper

Posted By Peter J Harvey As this thread has discussed in detail some parts of the CSCS and other like schemes. I would be interested in any views on Construction Line as a competency based scheme for organisations in construction. I know this looks at policy and documented methods etc, but I do not know how wide this scheme is. Any views?
