Staff at my workplace have to recieve training on overhead gantry cranes and fall arrest systems. Can anyone tell me if the training should be to a national standard and should operators recieve certification.
If the answer is no then how do we as a company know the training is suitable and sufficient.

See HSE Guidance Note number GS39 'Training of Crane Drivers and Slingers'.
Also I believe that there is a British Standard (BS7121?) dealing with such training, and any reputable training organisation would issue certification to successful trainees.
