Can anyone remind me what the requirement is for tying in scaffolds to structures?
Contractor on site insisting on one Hilti every 20sq/m - sure thats not right! Away from my electronic brain so can't check

Bryn, depends on various factors including whether tube and fitting or system scaffold (ie Kwikstage, Cuplok or similar.
In general system scaffolds need about twice as many ties as tube and fitting, all else being equal... this reflects that usually they are erected without cross bracing.
Tying recommendations are contained in BS5973 for tube and fitting and in manufacturers' handbooks for system scaffolds.
5973 indicates that where ties do not include reveal ties, the expected pattern should be 32-40 sq m per tie (depending on whether of not the ties are removable) for an unsheeted scaffold, or 12.5-16 sq m per tie for a sheeted scaffold.
If you have an unsheeted system scaffold, then 20 sq m per tie would be probably about right.
Also, if using Hilti's will need some pull-out testing, with proportion depending on material into which anchors are fixed, ie far more if say into brickwork, than into sandstone.
Regards, Peter

The CITB quote temporarily-removable ties (min 6.25KN at not less than every 32m2 and non temporarily-removable ties at not less than 40m2 for unsheeted 'tube and fitting' and 25m2 and 32m2 respectively for sheeted scaffolds using 12.5KN ties (doubled for 6.25KN)- and refer to manufacturers for system scaffolds. This may be where they are quoting the 25m2 from. As Peter points out wind, nature of structure, etc are also considerations.
