Posted By Mark Large We hold induction course for new entrants. Part of the induction concerns Health and Safety. Their responsabilities, those of their managers and a bit about DSE (our most widespread hazzard). Its all very dry stuff and retaining interest isn't easy. I was wondering whether anyone else did similar and how they kept it interesting and less technical. Example from one of our slides: "...must not consent, connive or neglect where health and safety requirements may be compromised." Accurate but not exactly exciting stuff.

Posted By Charles Ferguson Mark We run our H&S induction as a quiz, which is issued at the start and then the debrief forms the basis for all the topics we want to cover, with slides elaborating some of the points. There is an element of humour in the questions that tends to break the ice and break the stereotype that it's ‘H&S wake me up when it's over’. Finally, there is a major prise for the winner (box of smarties), which tends to add to the fun. Example question, which I use to prime for a discussion on violent and aggressive behaviour from our clients. Q. A member of the public has been threatening and abusive to you. Do you: a accept it as one of those things? b report the incident to your supervisor? c plan your revenge? d make a nice cup of tea? We find that if handled correctly and delegate participation is encouraged the sessions get very good reviews. Hope this is helpful. Charles

Posted By Shaun Deely Mark, Our office induction is video based currently and as our main hazard DSE is included, but very briefly!.To counter this we are now looking at buying intranet delivered an interactive DSE training/ self assessment package.
