A local charity has arranged (without, until yesterday, my knowledge!) a "sponsored firewalking" event in one of our car-parks.
When I expressed my concern I was advised that since it was in the car park we were not responsible, and received the usual rubbish about indemnity etc.
However, my view is the that Occupiers Liability will still apply, and since we have control of the premises, we will be responsible.
Any thoughts or experiences would be welcome. I know there was a case some time ago when a company was prosecuted for doing this, with inevitable results, during a "management weekend".
My risk assessment indicates "high" likelihood of "serious" injury or disablement, and since this is a totally avoidable risk my recommendation is "No", but I would appreciate some more ammunition. I don't think that any of our employees are directly involved

No doubt they all told of the Club 18-30 holidays when they all did it and it was great fun for all. They forget the 12 pints and bottle of Brandy prior to the event. Perhaps the bigger hazard is going to be the very, very, very,very merry people staggering round the carpark during and after. It is your property and I personally would indicate that they would be best in the garden of one of the organisers who will then control the intoxicated!!! and protect their flower beds and property.
Of course the rearrangement of a well known 2 word phrase comes to mind as an alternative route of attack

A number of universities have run this type of event over the years and as I understand it without any problems.
I have to say we have not yet had Fire Walking at Essex, mainly because we could not identify a suitable location. Had we been able to identify a location we would probably have gone ahead.
The risk assessment which was provided by the company who explored this with us was very comprehensive, covering the set up, management during the walk and then the clearance of the site.

If this is to take place, make sure that there is no employer:employee relationship on your part and that you are not in control of the site (eg a written and signed contract with the organisers giving them control of the site for the activity).
