We are a small marketing company of which our warehousing needs are growing rapidly. Therefore, we are moving into new premises in 6 months time. With this in mind I need to purchase some sort of mechanical handling a fork lift truck. I don't know which type I will need, petrol, diesel or electrical. Does anybody have any suggestions or contacts that may be able to help me with some details of suppliers. Many thanks.

Have you tried the Yellow Pages for local suppliers?

Sharon,
Have you purchased existing premises or designed/built new.
1) If the former, just contact an FTA etc accredited company, discuss which company with the Fork Truck Association, find them on the web.
If the latter, discuss with your planner/designer etc.
The load and heights to be lifted, seperation between pedestrians even width of aisles, turning circles, etc should all be looked at together in the planning stage. If it is too late, go to point (1) and get some professional advice before you purchase.
Do you have other premises, neighbours etc that you could look at for ideas?
Hope these ramblings help
Regards
Andy.

Sharon,
Some of the issues you will face when considering a FLT in your new premises will be:-
Is there adequate ventilation?
Are the floor surfaces of good condition?
Will the FLT be used outside of the premises?
This may help determine which type will be best for you. A battery operated FLT will need somewhere suitable for its charger and a method of expelling the gasses (unless a LEV is fitted). Diesel trucks (despite their claims) generate dust and are generally faster than electric ones. They are also quite expensive to speed restrict. LPG FLTs need a charging station, as does a diesel one. The way we are going is for battery FLTs with a gel type battery which have no vapours emitted. They are also safer in repest that they do not require a top up of battery fluid.
Hope this is of some help, if you require any further info, please do not hesitate to contact me.
