Hi Bob The best solution is to use pit covers (designed to take the expected vehicles wieghts) when the pit is not in use. You can also purchase portable barriers which can be used to cordon off the pit.Use of other control measures may such such as signage may also be appropriate

In my experience boarding etc over pits does not work in practice. Controls I have employed include
Restricted garage access
Warning signs
Cones at front end of pits ( warns persons entering the workshop but offers little no protection to mechanics etc)
Bungee ropes across open workshop doors to deter persons walking through
Edges of pits clearly marked with chevrons
Good garage lighting
Awareness through tool box talks
Keeping vehicles over pits if possible
Post office type barriers
Hope this may give some help in your particular circumstance
