Posted By Nora Sheppard What are your thoughts on requesting medical clearance information on hire. Should summer students be treated the same as all new hires? They may only be employed for a short period of time but a worker is a worker under the OHSA and in the eyes of the WSIB. Your feedback is welcome Thanks Nora

Posted By Neal Robertson Nora, I quite agree with you - a worker is a worker. We assess risks for all placements, issue the same PPE, give the same induction and on the job training etc. as for permanent new starts - if medical checks are routine for the job, I`d get them done too - finding out about a students asthma or epilepsy as they are being loaded into an ambulance will not go down too well. Remember to assess anyone under 18 as a young worker - you can download our free form at http://members.lycos.co.uk/sbsf and amend to your needs. Hope this helps NEAL

Posted By Jim Walker I'm with Neal on this. It is a hidden cost that the beancounters don't allow for when costing up temporary (read cheap)staff. Incidentally, my son (univ student) did a one week (5 days) temp. contract for a well known company - three days were taken up with induction training. Cost effective or what?
