Posted By Ged Hi Mike, A few thoughts on your lifejacket problem. Hope this is not granny teaching you to suck eggs. When selecting the correct buoyancy aids you need to think about the frequency of use, size/weight of the wearer, ability to swim, protective clothing in case of foul weather, use of tool belts, likely weather forecast and actual and water conditions Tidal, lake, fast flowing etc and last but not least the availability of help. Some standards BSEN 393: 1994 Lifejackets and personal buoyancy aids 50N..these have a buoyancy of not less than 50 Newtons for the average adult intended for use in sheltered waters and where help is close at hand and the user is a swimmer and in circumstances were more Bulky devices would impair the user activity or actually endanger them. BSEN 395 : 1994 ..100N these are for the average adult intended for relatively sheltered waters when normal clothing is being worn and wearers are capable of helping themselves. BS EN 396..’94…150N These are for the average adult and are intended for use in tidal waters or when foul weather clothing is being used, and were the wearer may not be capable of helping themselves due to injury or exhaustion..or a delay in rescue. BS EN 399..’94…275N these are for the average adult and are intended for use in tidal waters and extreme conditions when heavy protective clothing is worn or loads such as tool belts are being carried and were the wearer may not be able to help themselves again injury or exhaustion to time for rescue to arrive. One of the main manufacturers is Beauforts…try 0151 625 9151 they should be able to put you in the right direction. Regards Ged
