Posted By Martin I wonder if anyone can help, We (a local authority) operate some services from a multiple storey office building, and as such one department which deals with members of the public is on the 8th floor. Until recently all visitors were escorted up and down in the lift. However, this has raised concerns from staff doing the escorting because there is a reasonably high potential for these clients to be disgruntled and possibly aggressive to the staff member escorting them - very worrying in a small lift! However, if we allow the public to go up and down in the lift by themselves, this poses rsiks to other lift users, as these lifts are not exclusive to that floor or to the public. Moving the public accessible departments to the ground floor is a long term solution, but has anyone else had experience of dealing with this risk that we could benefit from in the short term. Security staff are availble in the lobby, and can be alerted to possible problems, but it is not practicable to staff the lifts permanently. Any help would be gratefully received.

Posted By Bob Randall Hi Martin, I very much doubt that you have a duty of care to protect members of the public from other members of the public even if they are your clients. You may feel a moral responsibility but you have no legal duty. Maybe you should instal CCTV in the lifts to record any agressive behaviour so that the Police can have a greater chance of success in the event that there is aneed for a prosecution. Bob
