Posted By M Wilson We are currenlty surveying a four storey residential building comprising 85 number flats for a local authority with a view to refurbishing the same. At present there is a fire alarm system installed to the communal areas that is linked to the doors. Due to vandalism we are considering whether it is worth maintaining the system as additional attacks are likely. Accordingly I have contacted building control who have confirmed that they would require us to install a fire alarm system to the communal areas. Is there any other specific legislation that requires the installation of fire alarms to communal areas? Any comments or sources of info would be of assistance. I have contacted the local fire authority who suggested I contact building control. many thanks

Posted By Robert K Lewis The high incidence of vandalism in the communal areas makes the Risk Assessment more certain that an alarm system is potentially required. What about sprinklers to dampen the ardour of the fire raisers. There are some very good systems around at the moment, according to the sales people. Don't forget this is often a workplace for some employees such as caretakers and maintenance workers. Bob

Posted By Mark Eden I sugest you contact your local fire safety centre and arrange a visit from a fire safety officer, they are there to help you and most have a wealth of knowledge that they are willing to share, kind regards M.Eden
