Posted By peter gotch Bob L's comment about trainers understanding of design risk assessment highlights two issues: 1. A lot of CDM training programmes have failed to put CDM into context. CDM itself does not require design risk assessment, so this topic critical to designers' CDM compliance has been omitted. 2. Trainers may have limited understanding of the design process, and thence why things are likely to go wrong and what to do to succeed. By the time CDM came into force we had put nearly 200 of our project staff through CDM-related training via in-house and open training events, eg with delegates from our clients. However, we decided to put 16 key staff onto extended training to spearhead our planning supervisor capability via a 3 day course. We commissioned this externally, through a well known company with a trainer with HSE and construction experience, inputting into the planning of the event, and specifying the need for practical case studies etc to make up the majority of the programme. In practice this event was a failure as the trainer did not have the experience of planning and managing construction projects to be to respond effectively to our delegates' questions on real life practical issues in design and planning. You learn from your mistakes! Peter
