Posted By Steve Hulett I am aware that new legislation is being introduced shortly, WEEE and RoHS, which will impact on the Electronics industry. My company is a wholesale distributor of electronic components. We do not produce nor distribute any hazardous chemicals/substances. In their 'solid state'electronic components are stable and present no hazardous substance risk but obviously upon decomposition due to exposure to fire or recycling the risk changes. My question is,"Are MSDS's required for electronic components?" bearing in mind the chemicals used in their manufacture and subsequent disposal. If so where can i find them? thanks in advance Steve

Posted By Laura Reed Steve, The WEEE Directive and RoHS are not Health and Safety Requirements - they come from European Directives on Environmental Protection. The EC have Published a number of Directives collectively known as The Producer Responsibility Directives which make Producers of Equipment/ Products etc responsible for their own waste. The Producers will have to Recover & Reuse/Recycle a certain % of their products when they come to the end of their life (i.e. when they are ready for disposal) to do this they need information on the constituent parts and what will be required is 100% materials declaration (that remains in the product at its disposal) for each component part of a product and there will also be certain materials that are prohibited for use or restricted for use due to their hazardous properties (e.g. mercury, cadmium, lead, hexavalent chrome, etc). This is different from MSDS. I hope that this helps to clarify the requirements of WEEE.If you require additional information then feel free to contact me for more details. Regards, Laura
