Posted By Shane Johnston The HSE publication Fire Safety - An Employer's Guide 1999 (ISBN 0-113-41229-0). recommends weekly visual inspections and annual maintenance of fire extinguishers. While most employers conduct annual maintenance, I do not believe many employers do the weekly visual inspections. Our visual inspections have indicated that we very rarely, if every, get any problems. As a consequence we want to increase the period between visual inspections to once every three months. This will save approx £30k in previously lost production in our engineering workshops. Money we would rather spend on other risks. Can I ask how frequently you conduct the Visual Inspections.

Posted By Paul Craythorne Shane, Your visual inspections of fire extinguishers should be based on the circumstances of the situation. If you have a problem with employees deliberately setting them off or if they frequently go missing or get moved about then you may wish to carry out an inspection quite frequently. However, you now appear to have sufficient evidence to justify reviewing the issue and determining that they need not be inspected quite so frequently. At the end of the day everything is based on assessment and I would suggest that you have carried out an assessment and concluded that it is no longer reasonably practicable to inspect on a weekly basis (especially if your figure of £30,000 is accurate). Hope this helps. Regards, Paul Craythorne

Posted By Jim Rollinson BS 5306 Pt 3 'Reccomendation for inspection by user' states not less than quarterly, prefably once per month. Its worth a good read. Jim.

Posted By Neal Robertson I give our extinguishers a monthly visual check, inspecting the tamperproof tags etc. More frequent inspections probably wouldn`t yield any benefits - in 5 years we have only had one malicious discharge of a CO2 out of 100+ extinguishers on site, which apparently happened 30mins after its monthly inspection! Feedback from our subsidiary companies paints a similar picture.
