Posted By Jim Rollinson I am putting together an emergecy procedures document covering a range of eventualities. One question I looking for guidance on is if in the event of a major failure in water supply, how long can you expect staff to work without normal drinking water and toilet facilities. Is walking to another building acceptable for periods longer than 4 or perhaps 8 hours. For prolonged periods (days) we would look to chemical toilets and water bowsers. Any thoughts?

Posted By Paul Craythorne Jim, It looks like you have already found the answer and are just looking for some reassurance. I can't give you that but what you are stating would seem reasonable in an emergency. Regards, Paul Craythorne

Posted By Dave Wilson What is the likelihood of this happening? Dont know the circumstances, but where would you get a water bowser from a short notice and who wouild control the 'water quality' enough so that it remains potable. Would the Water Authority not guarantee resumption of service inside a specified time and provide an alternative in the mean time? In my opinion I if its onbly for 4/8 hours buy some water from the local supermarket or install drinking water machines. Remember that drinking water is not water that comes from the tap in the toilets! a Wash Hand Basin is just that and NOT a drinking fountain. Hope this helps mate suggest you give the Water Company a ring and speak to their Emergency Planning Officer.

Posted By Charles New It is my understanding that you should try to maintain a twentyfour hour supply of cold water in the cold water storage tanks to cover for a mains failure. This will supply the WC's etc. Drinking water could be supplied from bottles bought locally for the duration of the mains supply failure. If my memory serves me right there is some guidance on appropriate volumes of stored water in CIBSE Technical Memorandum TM13. Hope this helps.
