I am surprised and somewhat disappointed that this course has not been recognised and given CPD status. It appears to me that the audience who should attend this type of training course would be more attracted to it if CPD applied. Before you all scream ‘but they shouldn’t attend if all they want is CPD’ please keep in mind CPD is very important to many professionals i.e. Engineers and many of them prioritise their training needs around the CPD system. Comments please.

Please remember that this course is currently set at NVQ 3 minus. Therefore it is of a lower level than TechSP are anticipated to already know. However if you are talking about non-members with CPD in other organisations then they can use it if their requirements permit.
CPD is about personal development and I am sure that we need to ensure that this is about a moving forwards in our knowledge and skill base.

My question is, who exactly is the Managing Safely course now aimed at? as we now see the Nebosh General Certificate is aimed at managers.
The Managing Safely course has proved exceptionally successful to a great number of organisations I have been involved with over the years, in changing behaviours and performance of delegates.
I am agreement with the originator of this thread, IOSH could promote the course to other institutions as worthy of CPD recognition.

We have worked through a course accredited by ILM (institute of leadership and management) for CPD for managers. This has worked well, it is at a level 4 and contains the legal obligations which are relevent to managers in ensuring safety.

the CPD courses presented by IOSH are aimed at developing Safety and Health Practitioners, though non IOSH members are welcome - the pricing policy reflects this and IOSH would run into problems with Licenced Managing Safely providers if the programme was included in the CPD system.
Managing Safely is not aimed at Safety Practitioners but at those who are involved in management and need to increase their health and safety knowledge.
I can see some validity with Nicks point regarding IOSH offering the programme to other professional institutions on a CPD basis for their members - Suggest contacting Hazel Harvey or Carolyn Welch to asertain it can be placed on the agenda of the next CPD sub commitee meeting.

As far as I am aware, the 2003 IOSH professional development courses catalogue states that specific allocation of CPD points has been discontinued as the system has now matured to the extent that individual participants should make their own judgments on development value, based on the guidelines set out in the IOSH CPD record book.
It is probably upto the other professional bodies to decide whether "Managing Safely" or for that matter any other relevant training/development courses qualify for their own CPD scheme.

Thanks for your comments, the basis for the question related to an Engineer who asked me about CPD and if he could claim points because he had attended this course. This was an in-house course which I deliver.
Clearly to have such a course and be able to deliver in-house has great advantages, however we feel our senior professionals would be more 'willing' and less 'pressed' to attend if the course attracted CPD.
From your comments it seems other professional bodies will award CPD points to 'managing safely' if they deem it appropriate
