Posted By Trevor Pierce In a method statement for demolition, the Group Safety Advisor and myself have come across the term "span-set" probably in relation to either harnesses or safety lines. Can anyone enlighten us as to what the term means? Thanks in advance. Trevor.

Posted By Nick Higginson Trevor, Span-set are a company that (I think) manufacture harnesses/safety lines/rescue kits/scaffold etc. I seem to remember they did some training for us on inspection of safety harnesses. Regards, Nick

Posted By Clive Spencer Hi trevor, Yes the term of span set is used in the construction industry for a piece of equipment which is used as you have mentioned already with Harness. it is a running line which is used as a fall arrest system and should only be used as LAST RESORT. If that is any help.

Posted By Martin Gray As previosly stated Spanset is a temporary running line which should be used when no permanent fall arrest running line is installed. It is a webbing strap with a ratchet similar to a lorry ratchet for tightening. With the best will in the world even though you tighten the strap as best you can there is still a large amount of give in the strap. I have cause to use this equipment on many occassions as many of the premises we search are not equipped with running wires. The main problem with using this equipment is finding a suitable anchorage point that will take the strain of the ratchet and also the added weight of the individual should they fall. This should only be used as a last resort and by trained staff who understand the limitations of the building structure/anchorage point.

Posted By Chris Knagg Span-sets used in construction and rigging generally refer to continuous looped textile slings. They come in all sorts of sizes and lifting capabilities and are used for many different types of lifting or suspending operations. Should be treated as any other lifting accessory.
