We have to lift a pump unit out of a plant room. Low ceiling, no lifting beam, loads of pipes etc.
The pump can not be dismantled to lighten it as it is a complete unit. It weighs about 250 kgs.
To lift it we will have to make a frame – the design and measurements are totally unique to this job.
Obviously this frame will not be certificated or have SWL.
We have a load cell that will tell us the weight of what we are lifting.
Can we –
1.Build frame
2.Test to 400 kgs using our load cell
3.Document the test and equipment used
4.Go on site and set up
5.Test lift pump using our load cell to confirm weight
6.Lift the pump
Write all this up in the RA and method statement.
How do we stand?
Comments and advice gratefully recieved.

Why can't you have this frame certificated? We manufacture quite a lot of lifting equipment ourselves but use the services of Stallion Testing who come in and proof load our equipment and issue a Certificate of Safe Working Load for it which is compliant under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. You must have a similar test house near where you are. I don't think the cost is excessive, I believe they come in for the day for about £100 and certify everything that needs it and that they have time for.
Recommend you do not use without certification - if you have an accident the repercussions will be horrendous.

I assume you will first be having the frame structural design calculations done or checked by a suitably qualified engineer, as these will be needed for the certification process.

Hi,
what you do about getting it out is probably just the start of your problems. Are you going to put it back? If so then start thinking about CDM and the implications on on-going maintenance.
How much room do you have over the floor? What size is the hole and how deep? How big is the pump? The reason I ask these 'daft' questions is that we had a similar problem and solved it with an off the shelf engine hoist style device. Very light weight and spanned the opening.
