Could anyone tell me what the minimum space allowance is for a single workstation. I am performing DSE assessments and noticed that some workstations back on to each other - so that if both users "reverse" in their chair at the same time, they will clash. This is something I want to rectify but need facts/measurements to back me up.

We tend to work on the basis of 800 to 1000mm CLEAR space behind the seated user as this is what would be necessary for emergency egress in the event of fire for example. Would be interesed in others views though.

I wish there was more available on this. DfES guidance for the 16-19 age group shows designed table spacings at 1200mm where chairs back onto each other but I would not consider this adequate for gangways leading to escape routes.
