Posted By Nick Gilbert We are planning an event in our works canteen with an attendance of about 200 (usually frequented at lunchtime by 30-40). The building isn't covered by a fire cert. Can anyone advise what additional measures might be required? I'm assuming we need a fire risk assessment and have looked at emergency exits, of which there are two (but a third could be made available) Two are single width. Any advice/suggestions would be welcome. Thanks, Nick.

Posted By John Donaldson Nick You do not say what type of event you are planning. If you are inviting members of the public and providing live entertainment you may well require a Public Entertainment Licence from your LA even if it’s a one off. Most LAs will require at least 28 days notice and place requirements such as means of escape as a condition of the Licence.

Posted By Ken Taylor Unfortunately, this type of question is impossible to answer without having all the material information (nature of event; will licences be needed for public entertainment, alcohol, etc?; what will be physically present?; what will take place?; size and layout of room; positions and sizes of exits; routes to final exits; are there stairs and what are their widths?; what other hazards are present in the building?; is there adequate signage?; can everyone get in and out in an emergency safely?; is there enough room to do what is proposed safely? will the existing fire precautions and extinguishers be sufficient? will stewards, be needed and how many? etc; etc.). You could try looking at the HSE's 'Events Safety Guide' for an idea of the things to consider but, if you don't have someone there with the necessary expertise, it would be better to speak to your local fire officer.

Posted By Nick Gilbert Thanks both for your responses. John, the event is an environmental presentation involving members of the local wildlife trust - so no live music and no alcohol! I'll take Ken's advice and have a look at the HSE's Events Guide. Not enough space here to go into the building details or the arrangements but do appreciate the pointers you've given. Regards, Nick.
