Dear All,
We have had an unusual situation arise. A department of ours has an individual who is qualified as a first aid instructor (not connected with her 'real' job). They want to use her to do some training in-house. I asked about her HSE approval and was told she was using the one from the company she did training for. I said this was not acceptable. The company has now been in touch and says that they have made her an Approved training centre and can use their HSE approval number. Is this legal? Also they have offered that our Council can become an approved centre (presumably then using their approval number as well).
Thoughts please.

This could be OK, if you think about it the St J Ambulance etc do 'in house' courses at your workplace, however if this person does the training who gets paid for delivery of the course? The company or the employee? would be careful.
Would suggest that your employer does not offer this training to 3rd parties as this is like getting the St J to do a course and you then selling those spaces on for profit.
If you wanted to offer this tarining then you would have to become accredited by the HSE etc.

There is some information in "The training of first aid at work : a guide to gaining and maintaining HSE approval" HSE booklet; HS(G)212;ISBN 071761896X.However, it will not give an explicit answer to your specific inquiry.
Alternatively, you can contact;-

The trainer can carry out the training and have an external first aid assessor come in to assess. These normally charge £50.00. The 4 day first aid in the workplace needs to be assessed. For the Appointed Person the course tutor would carry out an assessment where all successful students would receive a certificate recognised by the HSE & is valid for 3 years.
