I have a new colleague who is blind. I would like to carry out a risk assessment to ensure his safety at work which is mainly in an office type environment.
Can anybody tell me what hazards should be considered in relation to his disability or give me any other information which might be useful. So far I have addressed the issues with regard to fire etc. Thanks

The RNIB should be able to answer all of your questions and will probably already have literature on the subject. One thing to consider is computer accessibility (assuming that your colleague is to use a computer); voice control and audible output will be required.

Make sure you get your colleague fully involved in the process. Having survived his disability thus far, he can probably tell you a lot about what is and what is not hazardous - and there are almost certainly aspects you would not think about without his help. He may also tell you what preventive measures are likely to be the most effective in his case.
His needs will also depend on his degree of blindness.

Lance,
Contact the Disability Rights Commission ("DRC"). They can provide a wide range of advice and assistance and they can also advise on grants for specialist equipment, etc.
The DRC can be contacted on:
Telephone: 0845 7622 633
email: enquiry@drc-gb.org
web site: www.drc-gb.org
I hope this helps.
