Can anyone point me in the right direction to get info on a the cost and length of time it would take to do a complete Audit of Safety services on an NHS Trust with approx 2,300 employees.
I have called HSE who suggested ISCA who can only give me a list of Consultants names and I would have to contact each individually. I've also left a message with BSC.
Also the consultant or company must be reputable..is there a way to check other than what professional group they are affiliated to?
I'd be grateful of any help, Thanks

In order to answer your question, it would be first considering what the scope of the audit will be. Audits normally check for compliance. What do you want to confirm compliance against? Relevant Health and Safety Legislation or your own safety standards and systems.

You also need to consider the coverage of the audit. Do you want a high level audit that just confirms that the correct standards and systems are in place or do you want to test for compliance with them and if so do you want to carry out a sample of the Trust or to look at all operational units?

Regarding organisations, it might be worthwhile setting a minimum standard for the auditors (eg. MIOSH and Lead Auditor trained) and to choose organisations with names that people will recognise; when you state that you have been audited by such and such a body, unfortunately the better known the name the more credibility it might carry.

Have you consider approaching the Trust's insurers? they may offer an audit at a favourable rate knowing that it may reduce claims.

Have you tried RoSPA? When working in the NHS, I introduced the RoPSA QSA scheme - by training 'in-house' auditors and doing the job ourselves to a recognised (HS(G)65) and accredited (RoSPA) standard...

Use of a recognised protocol that is used in a number of industries simplifies benchmarking outwith your own specialisms, which I found very useful.

At that time (around 10 years ago now) RoSPA were developing their own resources to deliver 'consultant' audits - this may now be in place...
